CONTEMPORARY MIGRATION OF RUSSIA’S POPULATION AS COVERED BY CENTRAL NEWSPAPERS
The author’s primary attention is given to compliance of migration representation in mass media with actual processes. He analyzes migration from former USSR’s republic to Russia, migration in Moscow, directions of migration, and makes a point that mass media often misrepresent real migration situation and increase phobia, especially towards ethnic Caucasians. Media discussions about Russia’s migration policy as well as coverage of forced migrants situation and their treatment by Federal Migration Service and local authorities are broadly presented in the article. Illegal migration, in author’s view, is portrayed in media mainly negatively, in very biased and superficial manner. The author makes a conclusion about poor coverage of very important migration issues in central Russian newspapers.
